The Painting Start to Finish
LINE DRAWING
The line draw is the foundation for the composition -- establishing form and boundaries between transitions from light and shade.
CHARCOAL & INK
Charcoal and sometimes ink are applied to soften the lines of the drawing -- establishing the tonal and value structure -- light and dark -- for the image.
TONAL WAsh
A sepia tone wash is applied to the charcoal drawing which provides a warm cast on top of which oil paint is applied. In areas of flesh tone a blue green tonal wash is applied. Painting warm flesh colors over this is a technique originating in the Renaissance. Visit an art museum and you will often see this blue green tonal structure under the warm flesh tones.
HIGHLIGHTS & FLESH TONE
Titanium white in varying amounts is painted from mid tone to highlight to complete the value structure -- light and dark -- for the painting.
MIXING COLOR
Oil color is mixed on glass, in series progressing from dark to light. These increments of light and color are then painted in the correct location on the canvas. The painting starts here, all the colors for the painting are individually mixed and mapped on the palette.
MiXIng COLOR COnTINUED
Once colors are mixed. They are applied to the canvas at the appropriate location from shadow to highlight, from distance to foreground.
OIL PAINT START
The process of applying paint to using the appropriate value and color is facilitated by the colors series mixed on the palette.
OIL PAINT FINISH
Painting continues where final details are added and last refinements are made -- bringing the painting to completion.
