Sheel’s realistic, naturalistic, and yes a bit impressionistic artistic expression began at the tender age of seven. Guided in a variety of different techniques under the eye of several Vermont artists, he graduated from the University of Vermont and found inspiration from his close friend and mentor, former Yale art professor Caroll N. Jones Jr., a master of multi-layered painting technique rarely practiced since the Renaissance.

Sheel’s use of light, shadows, and color combined with atmospheric perspective allows you to immerse yourself in the scene -- as if it was unfolding before you. The positive, peaceful and often nostalgic feelings invoked by his creative expression may come from not only his skill and inspiration but from the meaning of his name – bliss. To date Sheel’s body of work has been created primarily through private commissions, with the notable exception of the Memories of Vermont Collection, which represents Sheel’s love for the unforgettable landscape and unique places found in Vermont.

Sheel has been featured in one man exhibitions at The State House in Montpelier, The Fisk Farm in Isle La Motte, the former Luxton-Jones Gallery in Shelburne and many other public venues throughout Vermont. Sheel’s work has been featured in Vermont Life and Vermont Quarterly Magazine as well as the Robb Report. “August Moon Over Burlington”, his best known painting was part of the Lake Champlain Rediscovered Exhibit with venues at Shelburne Farms, the National Arts Club in New York City, The Boston Public Library, The Southern Vermont Arts Council, and the Vermont State Capitol in Montpelier.

While Vermont inspired creatively, one of the biggest collections of his large format paintings can be found in Miami, and his originals and prints are appreciated around the world. People’s United Bank, National Life, Merrill Lynch, The University of Vermont and other public places display Sheel’s works including The Heart of the Village Inn, Shelburne. If you are traveling to Vermont you can view his work at his studio by appointment or visit Robert Paul Galleries in Stowe, The Art Hound in Essex Junction or the Shelburne Country Store in Shelburne.
